Best Charging Practices for the 2024 Kia Niro EV

Best Charging Practices for the 2024 Kia Niro EV

The Kia Niro EV is one of the most appealing and unique-looking EV crossovers on the market today and it has the powertrain to back up its futuristic looks. The Niro EV is a fully electric or battery-electric vehicle (BEV) that makes use of a 64.8 kWh battery and EV motor to help provide 201 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque, sent quickly to the front wheels via a one-speed direct drive automatic transmission.

It also has the ability to cruise for up to 407 kilometres on a single charge – but that all depends on how you drive it, of course. And how you drive it can change how you charge it as well.

Attached to the steering wheel you’ll see two paddles, one marked “+” and one marked with a “-“. These are your regen level paddles and they are how you decide which of the five regen levels – 0-3, plus one-pedal drive – and which one you choose will change how much drag occurs when you release the throttle as you come to a stop. One-pedal driving, meanwhile, not only provides the most power regen possible but will also allow you to easily creep in traffic without ever having to use the brake to come to a stop. So you’re gaining back power, and you’re more comfortable while you’re at it!

Brake regen, of course, is not how most Niro EV drivers will get the most charge; that’s done via plugging in at night. Even though it is a BEV and requires the large battery to accommodate that, the Niro EV does allow for charging on a household outlet. That will take a number of hours to complete from zero, however, so it’s recommended that Niro EV buyers install a level II 240V charger at their home to decrease charge times to the tune of about 50 per cent; you’ll go from 0 per cent to 100 per cent in about 6.5 hours when using a 240V outlet.

For best results when it comes time to charge your 2024 Kia Niro, however, you’ll need to plug in to a DC fast charger. The Niro can be charged at speeds of up to 85 kWh, which provides a charge time from 10-80 per cent in about 45 minutes.

Master your charging schedule, and the 2024 Kia Niro EV will be the perfect partner for commuting both within town and on weekend getaways.
